Join us for the ANNUAL MEETING of the Friends of the Palm Springs Library on Sunday, March 12, when we have the pleasure of presenting Steve Brown (KVCR PBS television) and Jim Conkle, one of the top leading authorities on Route 66 preservation, history & culture, speaking about their "kicks on Route 66."

The presentation, entitled "Route 66 through the Mojave Desert," will take the audience from Seligman, Arizona, along Route 66 to Victorville, California.  It will include the new Mojave Trails National Monument on which Jim Conkle worked extensively, gathering public support for the new national monument on behalf of Senator Dianne Feinstein and the Wildlands Conservancy.

Steve Brown is an award-winning journalist who runs Sun Runner Media, an independent regional media company that publishes The Sun Runner magazine, The Joshua Tree Tortoise Telegraph newspaper, The Joshua Tree Gateway Communities Visitor Guide; hosts the weekly Sun Runner Entertainment Calendar on KX96.3/92.1 FM in both the hi- and lo- desert; and produces, writes, and hosts Southwest Stories with Steve Brown, which has aired for two seasons on KVCR PBS TV to 5.7 million households across southern California.

Currently Steve is working on finishing production of Season 3 of Southwest Stories: Route 66 Through the Mojave Desert, with the season's co-host Jim Conkle.  As "Shanghai Brown," he is also in pre-production on a pilot for a pirate history travel series, is consulting on a rum documentary, and is working on a new pirate music project.  His band, There Be Pirates!, has toured England twice and has released two albums.  Steve is an endorsed artist for Tycoon Percussion, and also performs Greek music with his wife Delphine.

Jim Conkle is one of the world's leading authories on, and advocates for, America's Mother Road, Route 66.  Jim has spent decades of his life working on behalf of the road, and has received honors for his work from The White House, Smithsonian magazine, and others.  He led Hilton Hotels' Roadside Attractions campaign where Jim traveled for 66 days on Route 66 installing 66 roadside attractions signs.

Jim has traveled Route 66 more than 300 times, has led international tours down the road, from French photographers to Chinese Cadillac dealers, and has been a consultant on Route 66 issues for everyone from the National Park Service to Senator Dianne Feinstein and The Wildlands Conservancy.  He was the publisher of The Route 66 Pulse, a newspaper focused on the community of the road, and is the co-host for Season 3 of Southwest Stories with Steve Brown: Route 66 Through the Mojave Desert.

Mark your calendar to hear what are sure to be memorable historical nuggets from this expert pair about this infamous US highway!  Complimentary light refreshments will be served.  Cash bar available.
